History:
It is very interesting how the thoughts and prayers of two people - followed in response to the Cursillo
message of Apostolic Action in our environment - can blossom into what the Brown Bag Ministry is now
and still growing.
The Hearing of "Feed the poor, ..."
This special ministry has provided blessings to many people – not only those being served, but reaching
abundantly to those doing the serving. It has grown since the start in early 2005 preparing 25 bag
lunches delivered to one location in Raleigh to the preparation of 275 bags delivered to three different
locations plus the preparation of a hot meal twice per month.
Action:
The Brown Bag Ministry currently prepares and distributes lunches to the homeless and those in need
every Saturday at Moore’s Square in downtown Raleigh, with some bags also delivered to two other
locations in the Raleigh area. Working with other churches in the area, we also prepare hot meals to
feed 75-125 homeless, and persons in need, on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month. We also collect
and distribute various items for their hygiene care – we call them specialty bags.
In speaking to these Children of God, we are also trying to help them with their other needs. We are the
Catholic presence in this ecumenical outreach of other churches answering God’s call providing
assistance. The response from our community has been wonderful. We are so grateful for all the
donations and offers of support and help for this ministry. The Knights of Columbus & Indian Guides &
Princesses Tribes, Scout troops, and various church groups have begun to assist us over the past couple
of years, providing important life lessons to these children.
We meet at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, between 10 and 10:30 AM. We then pack
up the bags and leave the church at about 11:40 to go down to Moore Square. We bring various
desserts, donated by grocery stores, down to the park on that day and the groups can help distribute
them along with the bags. We are usually finished sometime between 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM. We ask each
group to provide one of the items that will go into the bag: either bottles of water, granola bars, or soft
fruit.
Prayer:
Currently there are prayers and searching to obtain a space for a temporary shelter and education
center to help these Children of God climb up and out of their valley.
